A Tour of Harlem River Murals

The visual arts are important to our educational program at St. Aloysius. Art is integrated into core subjects, and faculty have a strong commitment to using art as a way to reach children in the classroom.

In October, our middle school Gonzaga boys had an opportunity to take a tour of Harlem River Murals. The tour was led by an associate from Creative Art Workshops. During the trip, students explored the role of the artist in the community - how artists represent community, draw attention to community issues and create positive change. On a technical level, the boys explored the murals' compositions and what choices each artist made on a large scale.
The boys were inspired by their trip and are now designing paintings inspired by community issues. In the spring, we hope the boys will have a chance to create a mural outside, and our Bowman middle school girls will also have a chance to take the tour.
