Programs

St. Aloysius has a unique four-part structure:

The Mother Theodore program serves pre-school children ages 3 to 5 years, preparing them for elementary school in a safe and loving environment. The program stimulates young children to become eager learners by providing them with opportunities to work and play creatively in different media, acquire social skills and function well at appropriate developmental levels. In addition to group instruction, children can choose among various activities or learning centers, including painting, computers, writing, music, puzzles, kitchen and various other activities. The full school day continues with an optional after school program until 6 p.m., which is convenient for working parents.

The Pierre Toussaint program, an elementary school for children in grades 1 through 5, helps young students develop integrity and learn about personal responsibility while acquiring basic academic skills. Students in the program learn reading, writing, math, science, history, social studies, computer skills, Spanish language, visual arts, and music. In addition, 80% of the students attend enriching after school programming. The Pierre Toussaint program nurtures children during the foundational years, when they learn the basics of how to be good students and eager learners.

The Gonzaga Middle School for young men in grades 6, 7, and 8 addresses the special needs of inner-city boys as they reach adolescence. The program emphasizes a positive attitude, leadership skills, strong personal relationships, ethical decision-making and academic excellence. The literature-based program also teaches young men to love reading by exposing them to popular fiction, biographies, poetry, and the classics, as well as performing in oratory contests and attending Broadway plays. Grammar, reading comprehension, math, science, social studies, history, Spanish language, advanced computer skills, sports, art and music are all part of the curriculum. In addition, every student at Gonzaga attends after school programming, as well as summer school and summer leadership camp. All boys are accepted into private high schools, where they receive scholarship help from St. Aloysius.

The Sister Thea Bowman Middle School for young women in grades 6, 7, and 8 fosters the development of strong individuals by building confidence and self-respect, teaching sound values and promoting academic success. Literature, English grammar, math, science, social studies, Spanish language, art, music, public speaking, sports and computer instruction are all part of the curriculum. In addition, the faculty employs innovative approaches to help students understand and avoid such problems as abusive relationships, teen pregnancy, and drug use. Through the program, young women gain self-awareness, knowledge and the courage to make positive decisions and informed choices. All students take part in enriching after school programs, summer school and summer leadership camp, where they learn to cooperate and form enduring friendships. Each girl gains admission to a private high school and receives scholarship support from St. Aloysius.
